So, let’s get started to make your Darjeeling trip unusual!

Popularity of Darjeeling in India

Darjeeling, also referred to as The Queen of the Hills, is one of the iconic tourist places due to its stunning Himalayan views. While the world may know the name of the famous for its delicate aroma, Indians love it for many reasons.

From the UNESCO-listed Toy Trains to the Sandakfu trekking, cultural hubs (Tibetan, Nepali, Bhutia), Kanchenjunga, and many more, there are endless spots.

9 Unusual Things to Do in Darjeeling

Darjeeling Ropeway Over Tea Gardens in India

Darjeeling Ropeway

Whenever someone returns from a vacation to Darjeeling, I definitely ask them whether they have tried the ropeway or not. Most of the time, the answer is NO. A big miss!

The Darjeeling ropeway is an ordinary but less popular activity to do. This cable car ride gives a bird’s-eye view of the luscious green fields of the tea gardens, snowy mountain peaks, mountain ranges, and beautiful valleys. If you are a newlywed or just want some romantic experience, this is a must-do thing.

View of Batasia Loop, Darjeeling, India

Batasia Loop

If you want to experience the historical significance of Darjeeling, then Batasia Loop is the aesthetically pleasing spot you must visit. This famous spiral railway loop was commissioned in 1919. This Gorkha War Memorial part was established to honor the brave soldiers who were the fallen heroes of WWI and WWII.

From here, you can experience an unusual view of the city and learn about its history. And believe me, every picture from this point is Instagram-worthy.

Rock Climbing at HMI, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

Learn Rock Climbing at HMI

Mountain lovers always have the ambition of learning rock climbing. At the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, you can get various mountaineering courses at levels from beginners to experts.

Even though you don’t want a full-fledged course, the institute offers other adventurous activities which cost around 150 to 200 INR per person. The best time to get unmatched experience is from April to June or from September to December.

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

One of my favourite things to do in Darjeeling is experience the wildlife and lush forests. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary provides the exact feeling that a wildlife enthusiast will search for. From jeep safaris to the scenic beauty of mountain rivers, you can enjoy the rare backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas.

This sanctuary is home to Indian Bison, wild elephants, leopards, barking deer, Royal Bengal Tigers, and 300+ bird species. I visited in late November. The sky was clear and the temperature was mild, making it the ideal time for wildlife viewing.

Shri Mahakal Temple, Darjeeling

Mahakal Mandir

I was always fascinated by the concept that Lord Shiva lives at the peak of Mount Kailash, and this Mahakal Mandir helped me visualize that. This temple of Lord Shiva is located at the top of Observatory Hill. As this temple was situated as a Buddhist monastery before, it hasn’t become a place tourists often visit.

If you are confused about the things to do in Darjeeling, why not experience a unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist faiths?

Grave of Alexander Csoma de Kőrös

When I am searching for the best things to do in any place I visit, offbeat places come first in my list. The grave of Alexander Csoma de Kőrös is one such remote cemetery in Darjeeling. Alexander Csoma was a Hungarian linguistics expert who created the first Tibetan-English dictionary, which built a strong link between Hungary and India.

This cemetery has a peaceful, historical atmosphere set amidst the silent mountains. People who love to seek unique heritage sites rather than the common, crowded tourist spots will enjoy spending time here.

Bagora

Bagora is a quiet village located 21 km away from Darjeeling. This small village offers a spectacular view, like a sea of clouds. Located high above the crowded place, Bagora feels like a village paradise floating above the clouds.

To make this experience unforgettable, you can go trekking to explore the local tea gardens, engage in birdwatching, and experience the culture and lives of the villagers. A perfect rural charm that I will definitely visit again!

Teesta River Rafting

Another adventurous thing to do in Darjeeling is the Teesta River rafting. It is a thrilling excitement mixed with natural beauties and dangerous white water action. But no worries, getting proper training and following the instructor’s guidance properly makes the rafting more enjoyable than risky.

Teesta features mild to intense Grades which are perfect for both first-timers and seasoned adventurers. The journey navigates you through dense forests and deep valleys with views of deer and monkeys. Overall, not an activity that people usually do, but it is an unforgettable one.

Japanese Peace Pagoda, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

Japanese Peace Pagoda (pre-wedding)

Lastly, Japan is known as one of the greatest destinations for pre-wedding photo shoots. But if you can’t afford or have no time to travel to Japan, no need to worry. Visit Darjeeling for a pre-wedding photoshoot. The spiritual aura of the Japanese Peace Pagoda offers a calming atmosphere.

You can click classic photos with no disruptive background figures. Just visit the pagoda and walk around for perfect clicks as well as a romantic experience.

Kanchenjungha, Darjeeling – Mountains of Darjeeling

The Mountains of Darjeeling Are Calling!

Even though there are so many things to do in Darjeeling, most people among us seek out some offbeat places and unusual activities to make the trip unforgettable. Apart from the regular sightseeing places, there are definitely better, wonderful places hidden within the mountains.

I have mentioned my favourite extraordinaries in Darjeeling above. But did I miss something unusual that has to be in my next list? Feel free to let us know through the comment box below.
